Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
