Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the potential of his move to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
