Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of materials that included no new data.
