‘It Totally Altered My World!’ How Youthful Eco-Restoration Enthusiasts Revitalized a Farm – and Began a Campaign

That richly complex call of the nightingale is a uncommon presence in England nowadays, but not at the Surrey site. Four years ago, a solitary bird could be detected at this secluded location in the countryside of Surrey; lately, they were all around. “We were hearing them singing all night, from several zones,” says one ecologist, chief environmental expert for the youth rewilding group. A group of volunteers were camping out at the site, but the birds were so loud, “we stayed awake all night,” comments an engagement lead. “We were all worn out the next day, but it was so amazing.” An expert from the local conservation group came to help them trap and mark one of the birds the next morning, Cookson remembers: “He’d never touched a songbird in his possession before. He was teary.”

Rewilding Accelerates at Maple Farm

Nature recovery is by definition a slow process, but at this site at this property, after merely several seasons, the changes are already evident, and audible. The property was once a retirement home for equines. Now it’s a showpiece for the youth-led mission: to hasten nature recovery, in one of the most nature-depleted countries in the planet, and to link young people (18-30-year-olds) with a ecosystem they are often excluded from, and a climate crisis they are often powerless to prevent. Global heating advances, deforestation eliminates ecosystems, and another Cop summit draws to a frustrating conclusion in the host country – so what person could criticize youth for choosing to initiate change themselves?

The initiative was founded on the idea that there were individuals prepared to let a group of youthful amateurs on to their property

“The younger generation is the best educated ecologically that there’s ever been,” says the Youngwilders’ leader, a key figure. They are also “the most emotionally involved in the issues, and have played the smallest part to their origin, and, then, are also going to suffer the greatest as a consequence.”

Revitalization of the Property

Now, the organisation is taking root across the United Kingdom – and Maple Farm was the beginning, in multiple ways. “It’s the initial project, and where we created our network,” explains Molly Easton, as she provides a tour of the expansive property. “This was previously six different fields,” she states, as we move through long grass filled with shrubs, bordered by forest. “The primary visible difference is that we’ve eliminated all the enclosures, a significant length of it, to make it feel like one environment.” In the summer, they donned protective gear and cleared masses of harmful weeds, an aggressive flora that can irritate the flesh. “We’ve planted loads of natural barriers,” explains Easton. “But the key action is we’ve just given it space for a short time. We’ve eliminated a lot of livestock impact and noticed what’s come up.”

Low scrub and hedgerows are a excellent songbird habitat, she comments, although currently they’re managing some of the wild growth to develop a greater diversity of ecosystems and to link up different sections of the property. Young saplings will take a while to take root, but young trees from the surrounding woodland are already establishing themselves in the open areas; the crew have been setting up guards to protect them from animals.

Animals Returns in Large Numbers

There's more than the nightingales – animals is coming back in large numbers. Lately they’ve spotted reptiles, creatures, bats and bugs, says another co-director, as he uncovers one of their survey equipment (similar to a mat over a small hollow in the earth). “You discover creatures and animals sheltering under there, but it’s probably a somewhat cool for them now.” Wild nests, constructed from hollowed-out parts of wood and humming with insects, are fixed to some of the trees. The removal of animals has allowed invertebrates space to prosper in the meadows. When they came to this time, says Bennett, “I’d not ever encountered so many insects. There were just swarms of them. We were like, ‘What is going on?’”

Inception of the Movement

The first participants – Bennett, Durant, Easton and additional members – formed as students, pursuing or having an interest in environmental science. In 2019, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was indicating that the target of 1.5C of warming was looking out of reach, the activist was guiding the school strikes for environmental action, and advocate a speaker was addressing the generation suffering from “eco-worry”. It was also the period of a writer's book, Wilding, on how the authors revitalized the a nearby property from a struggling dairy farm into a thriving wildlife haven. “We were deeply influenced by the example, but what was the role for young people?” says Easton. “So we developed a website and contacted many of environmental organizations and were saying, ‘Do you occasionally get your property owners wanting to take action and you don’t have time?’”

Jack explains the account: “Our whole organisation was fundamentally founded on the notion that there were people who were willing to permit a collection of youthful enthusiasts on to their property indiscriminately, to decide on fairly massive decisions that would impact land value
