British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
