The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. A Season Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? The Youngster's Surprising Presence
One individual remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. Finding His True Position
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward.
