Sheff Wed Deals with Major Issues, Declares New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

The team's ongoing struggles are seen as a "significant problem" and the football regulator is aiming to acquire authority to investigate clubs in similar circumstances, its new chair the regulator has announced.

In a wide-ranging interview, Kogan, who was recently selected, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

The chairman convened with four supporters' associations associated with the Championship side recently.

The football club have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in 2025, with the club missing wage payments on five separate occasions, including in last month.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a significant problem for EFL and a major challenge for the sport," the regulator explained.

"Wednesday stands as one of the iconic names for the English game and in recent days we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will enable us to take the club and similar situations submitted for our review if they require examination and dealt with."

Monetary Issues and Leadership Concerns

Wednesday's embattled owner the Thai businessman suggested earlier this year he would be prepared to relinquish control at their home ground, but he has failed to complete a sale with potential new owners.

Missed wage deadlines on time in earlier this year caused limitations by the English Football League (EFL) in mid-year, blocking the team from conducting any player acquisitions for the next three transfer windows, although the ban was rescinded in late summer.

Regulator's Perspective

The regulator explained: "Our role exists to serve the Owls followers, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a regional establishment that has represented their community in many cases.

"I completely understand the team's plight, as I do for all the clubs that in modern times have encountered failure, or nearly ceased operations, for causes separate from the fans themselves."

Questioned about whether the authority might compel an chairman to relinquish a club if they are considered unfit, the regulator answered: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we assemble the facts and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But Kogan stressed that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be considered the final option and the authority would rather to work with them.

"The final option we would consider is start getting involved with an individual club, an individual owner, without being in a position to cooperate with that chairman to fix the issues that the club's facing and the owner's facing," the chairman stated.

"However, realistically, when you examine the past of the game, over the past few decades there have been particular chairmen, not many, but some who have been irresponsible in the way which they've been managing their organizations and finally refuse to accept accountability for the future."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The regulator engaged delegates from multiple organizations to detail the scope of the oversight body this week and stated it constituted a "proactive meeting" with a "substantial involvement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"This position carries substantial significance, because if we get it wrong, if the football community fails, the remarkable development accomplished could disappear rapidly," the chairman stated.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the context of the English game is a huge success story - we've got to keep it going.

"Substantial financial resources entering the sport and has come into football for the past two decades, because there's no guarantee it will continue to come into football, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on challenges and obviously, of the coming seasons."

Elite Division Worries

The Premier League opposed the creation of a regulator because of concerns about detrimental effects on the Premier League's sporting equality, but Kogan said: "I'm absolutely committed to the achievement and development as an financial organization of the top division.

"As someone who appreciates the concern of undermining the Premier League as a premium product of this country. But concurrently, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, in fact, they have been telling us in private they have a significant confidence."

Ideological Links

Kogan is still facing a "thorough examination" by the official appointments authority after he acknowledged providing funds to the opposition group in recent years.

The chairman provided financial support for Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I've been completely open about my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the regulator explained.

"I currently have no participation in any sort of politics."
