This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
