TikTok Provides Users Control to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that enables them to cut down on the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service disclosed that it now features over 1 billion AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The update is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a widespread launch. This shift comes amid a rise in AI-generated material, driven by emerging video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the quickest rising channels on another major platform primarily display content made by AI. A considerable share of this output is deemed mass-produced AI material, a phrase for inferior, mass-produced content that is typically nonsensical or surreal.

“We know from our community that a lot of users enjoy content produced via AI tools, from digital art to educational videos, and we intend to provide users the ability to increase or decrease of that, based on their own choices,” commented a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network identified as made with AI. Collectively, more than 100 m media items are submitted to the service each day, making clips made by AI a minor portion of its total content library.

User Control Features

Users will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI content they view by opening the content preference setting in the platform and picking the AI content topic. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the filter encompass politics, clothing, aesthetics, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its guidelines require content makers to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids harmful deepfakes of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any realistic artificial content that is unmarked can be removed under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will now add an artificially created watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing AI-generated material. This step is aimed to stop users from seeking to evade the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also establishing a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and institutions to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will assist educational bodies dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Platform Protection

The platform has defended its moderation strategy, during debate over proposals to lay off a large number of content moderators in the UK. It is expected to cut 439 jobs in its user protection department in the UK capital, with labor groups and internet security professionals expressing worry that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A company official stated that people-led review would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by removing the most distressing content ahead of it gets reviewed by people. The company reported a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by human moderators over the previous year due to the use of its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
