Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
